Introducing Sally Lowrie, author of the newly released title, Healthy Nourished Soul, and my dear friend. Sal is a Newcastle based creative, with an immense passion for health, wellness and wholesome food. We sat down to talk about her new book, her entrepreneurial journey, ways to nourish your soul and everything in between.
Merewether, NSW, Australia.
What's one of your favourite cafes, beaches or spots to go in your Hometown?
My favourite beach is my local break—Merewether Beach. I just love it, it is so beautiful and you will find me there on most days. My favourite cafe is my local cafe—Merewether Surfhouse. It is located on the beach, with the best ocean views. I go there every morning after I drop the kids off to school to have my morning coffee, and to take in the ocean views.
Describe your life in three words?
Happy, Fun & Wholesome.
Who are you and what is it that keeps your soul smiling?
I'm a mother, wife and creative soul with an immense passion for health, wellness and wholesome food. I'm a lover of the beach and most days you will find me beachside, however, having grown up riding horses on our family farm, I will forever be a country girl at heart.
Tell us a little something not many people know about you?
Most people wouldn't know that I play guitar, and that I also love to listen to country music.
Your insta @healthynourishedsoul is filled with so many darn delicious raw treats - Tell us about it? How did it all begin? When did you start making these beauties for all of us to indulge on?
I have a great little community on Instagram & Facebook, who support me so much. I know social media can be so negative these days, but I honestly find it amazing, and so thankful for it. I started my account a few years ago when I started making my raw treats, so people could follow me along my journey, and within months had so many requests from the public asking for sample boxes for them to try, so I started selling these and they were such a huge success.
How did your love of making healthy treats start?
When my two kids were born, my husband and I wanted to make sure we were giving them the very best start in life, so we began eating a mostly whole, unprocessed diet. I started realising quickly that most so called 'healthy' treats in shops and cafes were actually not so healthy for you, as they were filled with ingredients that weren't ideal for you. So I began creating my own healthy raw treats that not only tasted delicious, and looked amazing - were full of wholesome, nutrient dense ingredients. From this moment till now, my love for being in the kitchen creating new flavours and recipes for my family to indulge in, brings me so much joy and happiness.
Do you remember the first recipe you made?
My first recipe I ever created was my Caramel Glazed Coconut Bites - I remember my kids faces lighting up with smiles after taking their first bite, they were a hit straight away.
Who was the first cafe that stocked your goodies?
The amazing SeaMaiden Cafe at Redhead, NSW.
Now, you have shared all your secret recipes into one incredible book/journal - Healthy Nourished Soul which is coming out this November. Tell us a little about this? What can we expect to see?
Oh yes! My baby Healthy Nourished Soul will be out in November, and I am beyond excited to share her with the whole world. This book has been a dream of mine for the last 7 years, and after the last year working so hard behind the scenes with my amazing team, she is here and she is so beautiful! My book is brimming with dozens of delicious recipes for raw treats, tea blends and toxic-free beauty products, as well as beautiful quote pages and thought-provoking journaling prompts. It is the place to come and nourish your body, journal your thoughts and discover ways to nurture your soul. The perfect dose of self-care and wellness everybody needs in their lives.
You have so many mouth watering recipes, how did you come up and create all of these?
Since starting our families journey of eating a whole, unprocessed diet - I have been experimenting in the kitchen for years with different ingredients and flavours to use in my treats. I love coming up with my own take on your traditional 'not so good for you' bliss balls and slices, and creating something that is similar in looks and taste, but is healthy for you. There is nothing better when someone can't believe my treats are healthy for you - because they taste so good. I love hearing this, brings the biggest smile to my face.
I may be a little biased, but this book is so beautiful & more than just sharing your recipes, you've shared so many dreamy pictures, journaling pages and beautiful ways to nourish your soul. Why were these other parts important for you to include in the book, other than the writing?
I'm a big believer that health is more than what you're eating, it's also what your thinking, saying and believing. This is why I created this book to be more then just a cookbook - I wanted it to be a place where you will come to not only nourish your belly with wholesome food, but also your mind, body and soul.
What inspired you to create your own book?
My kids - I wanted to show them that they too can bring their dreams to life, no matter how big or small.
Tell us your 3 favourite treats we must try first?
Oh this is a hard question, as I have too many yummy ones to choose from, so here goes..Definitely my Choc Chip Cookie Dough Balls, followed by my Strawberry Fields Slice and let's finish with After Dinner Mint Slice, so delicious.
What ways do you Nourish your soul?
I nourish my soul in lots of ways like:
- Spending quality family time together - warms my heart so much.
- Watching the sunrise whilst walking along the beach with my dog.
- Having my morning coffee at my favourite cafe beachside every morning.
- Going to the beach and swimming in the ocean.
- Having a bath with my favourite music playing and candles - total bliss.
- Spending time with my friends.
I could go on and on, but they are just a few of my favourite ways to nourish my soul.
How do you press pause to reset or unwind?
I always make sure every day I take some time out of my day just for me - I call this my 'me time'. It's necessary for my health and wellness! I find if I don't take time out to 'fill my cup' so to speak, I am not the best version of myself that I know I can be.
How important is it for you to go slow some days?
So important! I'm very in tune with my body, and I listen to it - by being this way I know when I need to slow down, and take time out.
Do you have any tips for us to get started and on the right track to looking after our bodies & soul?
I look at my body as my temple, so I make sure to nourish and look after it as best I can, and encourage you all to try and do so too. Here a few little tips to help you on your way.
- Drinking a glass of warm lemon water in the morning to kickstart your body.
- Eating healthy: nourishing that body of yours with real, unprocessed wholesome food.
- Moving your body: whether it's going for a walk, running, yoga, dancing, gym, barre class or cross fit - just move your body daily.
- Self-care: Taking time out just for you to relax and do what makes you happy.
- Gratitude: Writing a list of things you are grateful for everyday, to remind yourself how much you truly have to be thankful for.
